YEAR 1 - TERM 1
Computer Arts and Animation
Fundamentals of Animation

The module introduces the mechanics of motion and the art of 2D animation. Explore the 12 principles of animation, physics, anatomy, form, hand-drawn techniques, and motion analysis while developing an original animation concept.

Explore artistic and technical processes in concept art for games, film, comics, and animation through visual research, observational and digital design, and industry applications.

Learn pre-production visualisation and foundational 3D techniques including modelling, texturing, lighting, animation, and audio while creating original assets and narrative-driven sequences.

Narrative Design

Learn the processes and techniques needed to formulate and explore effective, innovative game ideas, with attention to both gameplay structure and narrative design.

Develop the theoretical, practical, and technical knowledge required to work with game engines and operate effectively as a level designer.

Learn to design, balance, and manage in-game economies through a strategic approach to resources, progression, and player engagement.

Computer Arts and Animation
Critical Studies

Develop the ability to work with theoretical and critical frameworks and apply them to specialist writing relevant to your creative practice.

Advance your understanding of the visual development cycle for games while strengthening research, technical, creative, and industry-focused skills.

Gameplay Prototyping and Analytics

Design compelling gameplay systems through rapid prototyping, game-mechanic development, player-data analysis, progression, resources, and balancing.

Develop an in-depth understanding of production processes, creative-team management, collaboration, planning, and leadership.

Gameplay Mechanics Development

Formalise, implement, test, and iterate functional game mechanics within a modern game engine.

Explore artificial-intelligence techniques used to create intelligent systems and behaviours across different application domains.

Understand the programmable graphics pipeline and develop real-time shader and 3D graphics techniques.

Computer Arts and Animation
Pre-Production Research and Development (40 credits)

Develop a focused area of professional practice through research, industry analysis, specialist skill development, and a substantial body of pre-production work.

Build a professional portfolio through industry-aware projects, skills-gap analysis, research, and sustained specialist development.

Critical Design Practice

Use game design to address cultural, social, and civic themes through project briefs, interactive outcomes, and critical professional practice.

Define a research topic, questions, methods, and project plan supported by theory, existing practice, experimentation, and practical development.

Explore games through historical, cultural, social, and professional perspectives while developing research and critical-analysis skills.

Audio Programming

Learn the theory and practical application of digital audio and music in games, including creation, processing, implementation, and control.

Prepare for a career in games programming through recruitment practice, portfolio development, technical assessments, industry insight, and career planning.
